The Team 2000 Challenge!!
An important goal of the Research Conference is to promote collaborative research networks across all of the disciplines within the College of Health Sciences.
The Team 2000 Challenge allows teams of multi-disciplinary researchers to win ***glittering prizes*** by solving challenging, humorous and controversial problems. This competition was an outstanding success in 1998 and generated some of the most memorable moments from the Conference that year.
Submit a problem - > Win GLITTERING prizes
Any student or staff member within the College of Health Sciences can submit problems to the Conference Organising Committee. The problem must be written in less than 50 words and must be submitted to grantc@med.usyd.edu.au by Friday, 13th October (perhaps something macabre)
There is no specific requirement other than that the research problem is relevant to as many of the disciplines within the College as possible, and is currently unsolved. Simple examples might be:
- Develop an anti-stress machine
- The human genome project is well advanced. Cure cancer using the information it generates
- Halt the ageing process
Entries will be judged by a panel of the Deans of Faculties within the College of Health Sciences and the Pro-Vice Chancellor (College of Health Sciences). Prizes for the best entries will be awarded at the Conference.
Solve a research problem in a multi-disciplinary team -> Win GLITTERING prizes
On the morning of first day of conference delegates will be assigned randomly to multi-disciplinary teams and given a research problem to solve. A senior researcher will facilitate each team. Teams must submit a two-page summary of their solution by lunch-time of the second day.
Solutions will be judged by the Conference Organising Committee and a selection of the teams with best solutions will be asked to present at the final session when prizes will be awarded.
Group solutions will be posted on the web to stimulate ongoing debate.
Samples of winning solutions from Cell to Society 1 on the web site include:-
- Project "OHIO" a 15 year longitudinal, randomised, controlled trial with nested examination of the lived experiences of conference participants eating and drinking
- Development and evaluation of the clinical Tamagotchi
- Multi-disciplinary guidelines for avoiding C.R.A.S.S. (Collaborative Research-Associated-Stress-syndrome) a dodecahedral approach
- Does chocolate confer health benefits & what is its relationship to sex?
- Does Viagra affect STD's in DIM SIMs?
