Morning rounds
· Each day there are ward rounds at 08:00am and at 16:00 or 17:00pm with the Neonatologist. These are both ‘working’ and ’educational’ rounds.
Neonatal meeting
· These sessions are combined sessions for neonatal nurses and medical staff. A series of topics will be prepared by the registrars and fellow. These are often case presentations of a clinical problem and the relevant literature search; morbidity and mortality; ethical discussions; audits.
· This is an opportunity to develop presentation and teaching skills and registrars are encouraged to explore a variety of methods to make the session as educational as possible.
· We encourage all teaching to be saved on a shared computer network site for future reference and for those registrars who have not been able to attend the teaching session.
Neonatal Morbidity and Mortality Meeting
This meeting is held on the last Wednesday of the month. It reviews the any deaths or major morbidity from the previous month and problems are discussed in depth.
Journal club
This is held weekly on Wednesday. It involves the critical appraisal of current literature. Initially the neonatologists will facilitate the sessions and then each of the registrars will run a session. A paper with the critical appraisal worksheet is allocated to all.
Registrar teaching
This is done by the neonatologists and it is teaching that is relevant to needs of the registrars. If you have any specific requests, speak to the consultant directly.
Competency assessments and log book
At the beginning of your term at RNSH NCC registrars are asked to complete a competency self assessment form in various areas of neonatal practice. This is to give us an idea of your needs and requirements and how best to achieve these whilst you are here. A review of these objectives will be arranged mid – term and at the end of your term.
Study facilities
· The NCC has some neonatal reference books. You are most welcome to use them, however, books must not be taken out of the Department.
· Computers with internet access are available in the registrar’s office and in NCC.
· The RNSH library (Douglas Piper Library) is located on Level 2 of the Northern Clinical School Building (opposite Vindin House).
